Thomas Hilde, Undergraduate, College of Design, 2006 Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Fellowship Recipient.
Urban Rail Transit in Scandinavia
Over the course of July and August Thomas Hilde visited four Scandinavian capitals – Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki – in hopes of finding inspiration in the design of urban rail systems. His work consists of visual representations of how urban rail design can help support a willingness among the people to utilize public transportation.
Thomas continued his work on Scandinavian urban rail transit by presenting his research at the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Research Symposium. Held on April 18th , 2007 at Coffman Memorial Union's Great Hall, the symposium allowed students to share their research with the public.
Thomas then brought his research to the Minnesota state capitol. On April 25th he met with state senator D. Scott Dibble (District 60). Mr. Dibble is a member of the Senate Transportation Committee and Chair of the Transit Subcommittee. Thomas presented his work and the two discussed at length the present and future status of rail transit in the Twin Cities. There may be future opportunities for Thomas to share his research with the Senate Transit Subcommittee and MN Transit for Livable Communities.
