The Metropolitan Design Center (MDC) investigates how design can be used to make the metropolitan landscape more livable and sustainable. It examines urban design across metropolitan areas through projects, research, and education. The Center's work involves collaborations with faculty, nonprofits, and civic groups in the areas of:
The Design Center has made contributions in all of these areas.
The Design Center's work is done by an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, public health, and landscape ecology. The Design Center's work involves over 60 people each year--from core researchers to advisory board members. The Design Center was established with a grant from the Dayton Hudson Foundation and is housed within the College of Design (CDES) at the University of Minnesota. The Design Center currently receives funding from a number of national and local sources.
