Introduction
This symposium will explore the relationship between conservation science and design and the growing concern about how to address the it depends problem in the metropolitan landscape. The it depends problem has two dimensions. First, this problem is well known to landscape architects ever since they took their first ecology class as students when the answers to their questions about the application of ecological principles was always "it depends." From the perspective of conservation science, the problem is related to conflicting cultural values in society about resource use and biodiversity. Both dimensions of the it depends problem reflect transdisciplinary interest about the challenge of designing, planning, and managing metropolitan landscapes, which includes any place affected by urbanization or provides natural resources for human consumption.
