The Arnold Alanen Collection

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Arnold Alanen is a Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been recognized many times for his research, writing, and teaching, including four research and communications awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects and National Educator of the Year from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. Professor Alanen's research focuses on landscape history and cultural resource preservation. At UW-Madison, he teaches landscape history, cultural resource preservation, and landscape theory.

His collection of Twin Cities slides found here includes many from the 1960s and 1970s. The collection is broad with regard to image content and location; however, it does have a downtown Minneapolis focus, including some of the Nicollet Mall and Loring Greenway taken not long after they were built. Also of note are also several slides of Cedar Riverside taken in the mid 1970s and a number of aerials taken in the 1960s and early 1970s.
