
When to enroll
Students must enroll in the Certificate program at least 2 semesters before their graduation. Although there is no specific deadline, there are four application gateways dates - April 15, September 1, November 1, and January 15. The Program Director and the Faculty Oversight Committee will review applications in the two weeks following these dates and inform students soon thereafter if they are admitted. Applications received at other times will be processed as time permits.
Enrollment for College of Design (CDes) masters students: M.Arch., MLA, MSLA, and MS-SD.
If you are a College of Design masters student seeking admission, you will need to complete and submit your application at least two semesters before graduation. This application consists of two documents:
- A statement of purpose (up to two pages) describing your interest in the program and
- An Enrollment/Program Requirements Check List (download pdf below). On this form you will list the courses you have completed and the courses you plan to take to fulfill your Certificate program requirements. You must also obtain approval and signatures from your advisor and department chair.

Enrollment for Other UMN Graduate Students
For admission you will need to complete and submit your application at least two semesters before graduation. This application consists of two documents and a portfolio:
- A statement of purpose (up to two pages) describing your interest in the program.
- An Enrollment/Program Requirements Check List (download pdf below). On this form you will list the courses you have completed and the courses you plan to take to fulfill your Certificate program requirements. You must also obtain approval and signatures from your advisor and department chair.
- Demonstrate facility in graphical communication through a portfolio of hand and computer generated graphics. This portfolio should be no bigger than 11"x17" and no more than 20 pages long. Students may wish to take a class in graphical communications in order to prepare the portfolio.
