In the fall 2003 the Design Center received a request from the
Friends of Henry Park – a group of concerned residents from the
neighborhoods surrounding the proposed Henry Park – to assist them
in their effort to protect and preserve the property as public open space.
The proposed Henry Park is a 10 acre bluff land located in Highwood Hills,
Saint Paul, Minnesota. The proposed park is within the Mississippi National
River and Recreation Area, a unit of National Park System, and is also
part of the state-designated Mississippi River Critical area.
The Design Center produced a handout that can be used in their efforts to promote and raise funds for Henry Park.
The Design Center felt that it was important to produce maps that illustrate the proposed Henry Park within its wider context. To achieve this goal, data was gathered from numerous sources such as City of Saint Paul, City of Maplewood, Ramsey County, the National Park Service, and the Metropolitan Council. Using geographic information systems (GIS), the data was compiled into a composite map. A cross section drawing was also included in the handout to visualize the topography of the proposed Henry Park and its surroundings.

Outcome: The maps were used in fund-raising efforts. Update: October 2006--St. Paul's City Council has agreed to purchase 11 acres of Highwood bluffs and save the area from development as the city's newest park. The park will include wooded areas, trails, and will connect visitors to other green spaces nearby. For more information about the park, visit the Friends of Henry Park web site.
