Just south of downtown Duluth and the popular Canal Park entertainment district, Lincoln Park is an aging neighborhood with an active main street area, lots of commercial land now being redeveloped after the decline of the mining industry, and a hill-side residential area with spectacular views, affordable housing and a number of public safety challenges. The neighborhood is poised for change, but needed an outside perspective on its strengths and weaknesses to start the reinvestment discussion.
The Design Center worked with the Lincoln Park Business Group to re-envision the neighborhood’s overall design character, major gateways and connections, and relationship to the extraordinary land-forms of Lake Superior’s North Shore. A Powerpoint presentation at the group’s annual meeting presented main ideas and served as the summary of the Design Center’s work.
Outcome: The neighborhood is using work from the project in several ways: to influence reinvestment decisions by local business owners; to create a neighborhood map and brochure to engage potential funders, businesses and residents; and to build excitement and participation in the business group itself.
