The City of Crystal, a second-ring suburb of Minneapolis, was in need of ideas for enhancing street tree plantings throughout the city. Until recently, city code prohibited the planting in the rights-of-way along the streets. However, city code has now changed to allow for planting in these areas. Some homeowners have planted trees very close to the right-of-way, making traditional street tree plantings nearly impossible. The Design Center was asked to provide some ideas for reforesting the city streets on a limited budget, particularly in areas where traditional street tree plantings were not an option.
The design team created a brochure highlighting options for street tree plantings and boulevard gardens. The city will use the brochure to give homeowners ideas about how to add trees and gardens to their community to create a neighborhood identity.
