Direct Design Assistance: Downtown Concept Illustrations, Loretto, MN, 2004

The City of Loretto is a small town on the growing western edge of the Twin Cities. With aging infrastructure, growth pressures and imminent road projects, the citizens of Loretto are trying to proactively plan redevelopment that will use future growth to transform their community and increase its role as an area-wide community center.

The city has enacted a new zoning district to encourage compact and mixed-use redevelopment, completed the first phase of redevelopment along West Railway Street, and identified a number of projects to continue their momentum. Their next step is to conduct a thorough planning effort to coordinate all the various projects they have in mind.

Working with the mayor, a city council member and a grant-writing consultant, Design Center staff created concept sketches that illustrated the variety of projects in Loretto and showed their potential to work together to recreate downtown Loretto. The city used both the concepts and the illustrations in their application for a planning grant to conduct the larger study.

Outcome: The city used both the concepts and the illustrations in their application for a planning grant to conduct the larger study.
