Direct Design Assistance: North Loop, Minneapolis, 2004

The North Loop area near Minneapolis' downtown is experiencing a building boom with a number of developers designing streetscape improvements and open spaces in the district. Property developers in the area, led by Schafer Richardson, requested Design Center assistance to run a workshop for developers, their designers, city and neighborhood representatives.

The goals of this meeting were to:

  • Agree on a palette of streetscape elements
  • Ask questions about larger street design issues
  • Visualize the larger public realm including open spaces on private land

During the meeting, the various architects and developers presented their ideas regarding streetscape. Overall schemes and ideas for the neighborhood were discussed. The Design Center created a summary diagram of the different green space proposals showing links between existing and proposed green space.

Key ideas included working with the city on new lighting designs and creating a series of distinctive landmarks or "moments" to give identity to the area, rather than a uniform aesthetic. A larger neighborhood-based master plan is now under way with urban design and open space issues as a focus.
