With completion of the 2030 Regional Development Framework, the Metropolitan Council began updating plans for the four regional systems: transportation, parks and open space, environmental services, and aviation. In an effort to make parkways a part of these updates, in particular the transportation and parks
and open space plans, Council staff approached the Design Center asking the Center to digitize parkway information gathered as part of the Community Parkways project carried out in the late 1990s.
Using ArcGIS, Design Center staff created a map of Twin Cities parkways. The information was mapped at a broad scale-i.e. the centerlines of parkways as opposed to a finer scale using edge of pavement, sidewalks, etc. A Council park planner used the map in a series of meetings with the regional parks operating agencies.
