Direct Design Assistance: Rice Street Redevelopment Options, St. Paul, MN, 2004

The Rice Street corridor is an area undergoing changes in ethnic composition, changes that provide an opportunity to make the area into a destination for those outside the neighborhood. Working with the Rice Street Task Force of SPARC (http://www.sparcweb.org) this DDA suggests strategies for framing and enhancing this realm using new buildings and landscaping to make pedestrian friendly environments.

While it was not possible to add significant plantings to Rice Street itself, by introducing trees in side streets and parking lots, significant greening could occur. The final report for the project also suggested a number of additional features to give identity to the area and improve appearance. A firm of architects was engaged separately to propose potential facade improvements.

This project was also an experiment with using SketchUp, a computer visualizations program, to model the street area and demonstrate alternatives. Drawings in the final report come from that program.
