Direct Design Assistance: Small Cities Technical Assistance Workshops 2004

In this outreach project, Design Center staff created two density factsheets (for River City Centre in Shakopee and River Gables in Chaska). They also worked with the Livable Communities Program staff at the Metropolitan Council and the Association of Metropolitan Municipalities to create a series of open houses aimed at small cities throughout the seven-county metro area. The open houses provided one-stop opportunities for these cities to get information and find resources to deal with their pressing growth and redevelopment issues. Events were held in Waconia, Ramsey and Farmington.

At the workshops, Design Center staff distributed fact sheets, displayed information posters on development topics, and offered live advice and ideas to participants on their specific situations. In addition to informal viewers, specific conversations were held with staff and elected officials from the cities of Anoka, Cologne, Hilltop, Loretto, New Market, and representatives from Anoka County, Scott County, and Washington County.

These cities are dealing with issues ranging from major land use decisions related to freeway expansion; housing intensification; parks, open space, and trails protection; brownfields cleanup; and land assembly for redevelopment.
