Direct Design Assistance: Broadway High School Family Studies Class for Teen Parents, Minneapolis, 2004

Design Center staff ran three exercises as part of a high school class focused on the problems of housing and homelessness for teen parents. The goal of the class was for the students to learn about housing issues and housing choices for themselves and their children; to make a personal plan to work toward their choices; and to communicate what they have learned about housing needs for teen parents to public policy makers. Led by teacher Nancy Kristensen the class also involved Lutheran Social Services and other community organizations.

Exercises led by the Design Center included having students imagine their ideal house, assess the school neighborhood, and create an environmental autobiography. The Design Center also helped develop the final exhibition of student work, presented to key housing policy makers in an event at the College.

The final exhibition of class work was held at the University of Minnesota with the Mayor of Minneapolis attending and actively engaged in discussing issues of housing and homelessness with class members. The presentation was featured in the Pioneer Press: Toni Coleman, 2004, Housing and Homelessness: Students Advocate for Homes, June 4. The public schools hope to create a curriculum based on this experimental class and featuring issues of housing and neighborhood life.

The Design Center was involved with a second class and the web page for that class contains a curriculum guide.
