Direct Design Assistance: Downtown Minneapolis Open Space Assessment, Trust for Public Land, Minneapolis, MN, 2005

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) is interested in assessing the state of parks and open space in downtown Minneapolis. The project was in two phases. Phase one included preliminary identification of downtown open spaces, and phase two involved creating an inventory of all such spaces.

This inventory identified 55 open spaces in downtown Minneapolis. For the purposes of this preliminary assessment the downtown was defined as the area bounded by freeways (I-394, I-94, I-35W) and the Mississippi river.

The final report included four components:

  1. A map of open spaces in the downtown including those that are both publicly and privately owned.
  2. The results of a survey of all the spaces as a two page summary of each space. The survey was conducted in June 2005. It is as accurate as possible but may contain errors. Open spaces being reconstructed were listed but not inventoried.
  3. Photos of each site organized by site number.
  4. The initial survey results in a large format spreadsheet.

Outcome: TLP used the inventory to help it assess the need for open space in the downtown.
