The Center for Neighborhoods in association with the non-profit developers Powderhorn Residents' Group (PRG) and CommonBond asked the Design Center to conduct a block exercise, an educational workshop that helps residents understand issues related to development. The workshop allows participants to "build" their own developments and run numbers on their designs to determine the financial feasibility.
The residents identified "Block 009," located on North Lyndale Avenue, for redevelopment as an effort to quell crime and act as a showcase for housing in north Minneapolis. Design Center staff conducted the block exercise and created sketches of the models created by the participants. The exercise helped neighborhood residents better understand development and housing issues. Additionally, the workshop allowed developers to gain an understanding of the values of local residents as well as issues specific to the site. More information on the Minnesota Block Exercise is available here.
