Direct Design Assistance: Community Mapping, Ward 4, Minneapolis, MN, 2005

Ward 4 in North Minneapolis has many assets-including parks, parkways, and retail areas. The ward however faces a number of challenges including the negative perception of the area. The neighborhoods of Ward 4 in North Minneapolis have been the focus of several planning studies for individual neighborhoods, corridors, or other areas, but these plans have not been brought together. Creating a common vision for the entire ward is a goal of many neighborhood leaders. There are several areas that are in need of redevelopment, and the neighborhoods would like to join forces to guide this development in the direction that best suits their needs.

Members of the neighborhood Boards asked the Design Center to create (1) an overall summary of recent neighborhood planning initiatives and major city-wide goals and (2) a map of the assets of the area, increase positive public perception of the neighborhood, and attract new residents and businesses. In addition, they asked for (3) a public exercise to prioritize the areas to be redeveloped first. The maps will be displayed at a community wide event to gather input from citizens who are interested in shaping the future development within their community.
