Riverside Park, located in the city of Carver, Minnesota, sits within the floodplain of the Minnesota River. The park once was home to recreational ball fields, but frequent flooding has made this use difficult to maintain. The park completely floods approximately every five years, limiting the types of uses and structures that can be located there. Despite the many limitations of the park, the city would like to make this space into a place that the community can use and enjoy.
The Park and Recreation Committee asked the Design Center to prepare three design options for Riverside Park. The three options included: (1) restoration with native plants, (2) rustic camping and informal recreation, and (3) sports fields for formal recreation. The Committee used the designs to discuss which park features they felt would benefit the city most. Committee members chose to combine elements from the multiple options to create a final design which included space for camping, sports, and natural areas. The designs
will be used to gain funding and community
support for the project.
