Direct Design Assistance: Feline Rescue Landscape Plan, St. Paul, MN, 2006

In the spring of 2005 Feline Rescue, Inc., a no-kill cat shelter located in Saint Paul, purchased a former industrial warehouse to act as their new shelter. The building is surrounded by impervious surfaces and does not provide a welcoming appearance to visitors. There were concerns about runoff, particularly in the winter when ice accumulates and causes safety concerns. Members of the Feline Rescue organization asked the Design Center to explore options for an environmentally friendly and attractive landscape that is also safe for visitors. The designs will be used as a basis for future detailed design of the landscape, and to raise necessary funds for implementing the project.

The Design Center created two conceptual design options for the landscape surrounding the building. Both designs incorporate ideas for reducing runoff, improving water quality, and improving the appearance of the building and parking lot, while also considering the special needs of a facility of this nature. Elements from each design were combined to create a final conceptual plan.
