Parkview/Centerpoint School, located in White Bear Lake, recently had an addition put on their school. They were interested in incorporating environmentally friendly and inviting landscaping surrounding their new entrance. In order to generate ideas, they wanted to have students give their input on what they would like to see around their entrance. The art teachers asked the Design Center to lead three classrooms of 4th and 5th grade students through two class sessions teaching them about the design process and how to analyze a space.
The sessions were conducted over a two-week period and focused on different aspects of the design process. The first session instructed the students on analyzing the positive and negative aspects of the entrance of their school. The students then created drawings that articulated their vision for the landscape surrounding the entrance. The second session taught students about analyzing sun and shade conditions and about the value of rain gardens. This session, the students created collages representing the space around the entrance. The collages illustrated various locations for rain gardens and emphasized color, texture, and proportion. The drawings and collages will be put on display. Their ideas will be incorporated into the design for the entrance of the school.
