The Holland neighborhood in northeast Minneapolis is both bordered and traversed by railroads, and there are few buffers between the railroads and nearby residential areas. In order to increase open space amenities, Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association (HNIA) leased space along 27th Avenue from the Canadian Pacific railroad and has used that space for a community garden, a tot lot, and open space areas with benches and tree and shrub plantings. However, an additional parcel along 6th St. has not yet been planned. The HNIA asked the Design Center to come up with open space design options for this site.
The Design Center created three design options for the park. The options feature elements that the community has expressed interest in seeing in their neighborhood including: wildflower gardens, rain gardens, space for enjoying the outdoors, areas for dogs to play, and areas for train watching.
