Direct Design Assistance: Mapping Service Areas, Minnesota Literacy Council, St. Paul, MN, 2006

The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving literacy throughout Minnesota . The council offers literacy services for: adults and at-risk children, native-English speakers and recent immigrants, and urban and rural residents. The MLC consortium of 13 community-based nonprofits serves approximately 12,000 individuals a year. The council asked the Design Center to create a series of maps to help them determine if MLC services are placed were they are most needed.

The Design Center is in the process of creating maps. Map topics are as follows:

  • Distribution of individuals served at two points in time (i.e. 5 years apart) [Download: Coming Soon]
  • Map distribution of service locations; look at relation of locations to community served [Download: Coming Soon]
  • Map concentrations of selected languages (census) [Download: Coming Soon]
  • Other indicators (parcel/housing stock; income, other) that may be indicators of population trends [Download: Coming Soon]

In addition, the Design Center created maps that illustrated the locations of students in 2001 and 2006 of the all of the St. Paul Literacy Consortium members.
