Direct Design Assistance: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Class, North Community High School, Minneapolis, MN, 2007

As part of the West Broadway Alive! project, staff from the City of Minneapolis Community Planning and Economic Development partnered with a geography teacher at North High in North Minneapolis to work with students in urban geography to focus on the safety of their neighborhood. They asked the Design Center to introduce the students to Crime Prevention through Environmental design (CPTED) by creating a curriculum that would help them to think critically about how to improve the safety along West Broadway Avenue .

The Design Center assisted with leading a series of class sessions at North High. The classes included a presentation on CPTED principles, a field trip to photograph areas along West Broadway, mapping exercises, and creating design recommendations for improving the safety along West Broadway.

The students' work will be on display at a West Broadway Alive public meeting.
