The planned Central Corridor light rail line will connect St. Paul and Minneapolis, and will meet up with the existing Hiawatha line. There is a proposed stop on the west bank of the University of Minnesota campus. The location of the proposed stop would serve the University but does not maximize benefits to the wider West Bank community. The West Bank Community Development Corporation is proposing to relocate the stop a few blocks to the west on Cedar Avenue to better serve the residents and businesses in this area, and asked the Design Center to analyze the pros and cons of each potential stop.
The Design Center created a map illustrating the locations of various community assets within half-mile buffers of the existing, proposed, and alternative light rail stations. Items mapped include grocery stores, schools, arts centers, community services, religious institutions, restaurants, undeveloped land, and walking routes from the stations to Riverside Towers.
The map was used in a public meeting sponsored by Dania Partners, a group representing many west bank organizations, on April 13, 2007.
