Past Projects : 2004 - 2007 : Telling River Stories

Metropolitan Design Center Director Ann Forsyth was part of a team of scholars at the University of Minnesota that has been awarded a research collaborative grant by the University's Institute for Advanced Studies.

The research collaborative, "Telling River Stories," consists of, in addition to Forsyth, Gail Dubrow, Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Judith Martin, Professor and Program Head in Urban Studies Barbara Liukkonen, Education Coordinator, Water Resources Center, and Pat Nunnally, Coordinator of the University's Mississippi River Design Initiative.

The research collaborative presented a series of seminars and activities during the 2006-2007 academic year on themes such as memory and sense of place, urban riverfront redevelopment, interpretation and community-building, scientific and policy innovations in urban water quality management, and potential University of Minnesota involvement in Twin Cities Mississippi River initiatives. The collaborative will also develop strategies to raise ongoing programmatic funding.

The Institute for Advanced Studies fosters intellectual collaboration across collegiate and disciplinary boundaries at the University of Minnesota. Housed in the College of Liberal Arts, the IAS develops public programming each year organized around an encompassing theme such as "The Politics of Populations," as well as holds a number of smaller gatherings around diverse themes.
