Design for Health/Healthy Comprehensive Planning

For much more information on this topic go to the project web site at http://www.designforhealth.net

In 2008 municipalities across the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area are mandated to complete comprehensive plans for the Metropolitan Council. During 2006 and 2007 cities and townships will be updating their overall planning and revising ordinances to implement those plans. Focusing on the comprehensive planning process, this technical assistance will bridge the gap between the emerging research base on community design and active living and the questions and priorities of local governments. While specifically addressing the Twin Cities metropolitan area where comprehensive planning is mandated during this period, the tools, case studies, and model ordinances created through this technical assistance will be useful throughout the state.

The technical assistance includes:
· Workshops, keynote speakers, and interactive critiques of example plans dealing with issues such as active living and the built environment; health impact assessment; trail design; etc.
· A technical assistance library that includes a new Health Impact Assessment (HIA) tool, comprehensive plan case studies and prototype plan elements in land use and urban design (as well as open space and transportation), and model ordinance language.
· Individualized technical assistance with a small number of communities selected by the funder, Blue Cross Blue Shield.
· Web-based resource center.

This work takes an evidence-based approach that also incorporates detailed illustrations.
