Past Projects : 2004 - 2007 : Housing

The Design Center's work in affordable and higher density housing revolves around a number of related initiatives and involves collaborations with university researchers and nonprofits. Current and recent projects include:

  • http://www.housinginitiative.org (2006-):
This web site brings together materials from both phases of the Corridor Housing Initiative into one location.
  • Corridor Housing Initiative, Phase 2 (2005-2007): This project extends the work of the Minneapolis Corridor Housing Initiative into St. Paul and the Twin Cities suburbs and also packages educational materials and interactive exercises so that they can be used elsewhere.
  • Affordable Housing Initiative (2003-2006): This initiative includes participants from the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. The multi-disciplinary effort will examine the social, technological, and design issues related to the development, construction, and maintenance of affordable housing. As one of the project participants, the Design Center is providing space for the administration of the Affordable Housing Initiative. The initiative has received a Housing Futures COPC Grant from HUD for 2003-2006.
  • Housing Development Workshops (2005): The Design Center has facilitated block exercises for several groups including the Northeast CDC working with the Beltrami Neighborhood in Minneapolis.
  • Corridor Housing Initiative, Phase 1, Minneapolis (2003-2005): Convened by the Center for Neighborhoods, this project coordinated city and neighborhood planning processes to demonstrate strategies for increasing the supply of affordable housing in the city. The Design Center worked with the Center for Neighborhoods and other project partners to develop educational materials and urban design best practices for developing housing along five urban corridors.
  • Residential Design in Minneapolis (2003-2004): For the City of Minneapolis Community Planning and Economic Development Department, the Design Center developed public education materials in the areas of urban design, housing intensification and housing density, the design of manufactured housing and "pop-top" additions, strategies for maintaining neighborhood character in areas developed in the mid-twentieth century, and neighborhood planning participation.
  • Design Briefs: Several Design Briefs deal with housing issues.
  • Faculty Fellowships: Affordable Housing is the subject of a Dayton Hudson Faculty Fellowship project by Marc Swackhamer (Draft House Project, 2005-2006).
