Publications: Fact Sheets: Innovative Development Facts and Resources

Developments that increase the intensity of activity in suburbs, preserve green space on the urban edge, or reuse former industrial sites often demonstrate some kind of innovation.

This section of the Design Center web site contains links to facts and figures about such innovative developments, including information compiled by the Design Center and materials produced by others.

Metropolitan Council Livable Communities Program
This program, that provides funding for innovative development in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, received the 2003 EPA Award for Overall Excellence in Smart Growth.

The Minnesota Land Trust—seven conservation design cases
A conservation organization, the Minnesota Land Trust partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Urban and Regional Affairs and the Design Institute to prepare Conservation Design Portfolio: Preserving Minnesota Landscapes through Creative Development. The portfolio contains seven case studies of conservation designs that develop housing in a clustered form that preserves open space in bigger areas than traditional large lot developments.

Projects include:

  • Mineral Springs, Goodhue County
  • Windsor Park, Elk River
  • Wild Meadows, Medina
  • High Park Village, Red Wing
  • Hunter’s Ridge, 2nd Addition, May Township

  • Fields of St. Croix, Lake Elmo—images are also available in the Design Center’s Innovative Developments Slide Shows

The Design Center web site contains additional resources on innovative projects in the Twin Cities in a variety of formats.

Innovative Developments Slide Show—eight cases
The Innovative Developments slide show features aerial images of a number of innovative developments in the Twin Cities. More are available in our on line image bank. Each slide includes a short description of why the developments are innovative.

Projects include:

  • H.B. Fuller Company, Vadnais Heights
  • Centennial Lakes, Edina
  • Park Place, Farmington. It is also described at the Farmington project page on this website.
  • Jackson Meadow, Marine on St. Croix—Also available as a Minnesota Land Trust case

Online Cases:

  • The Humboldt Greenway project in Minneapolis involved redevelopment of a postwar suburban area. Information includes a downloadable case study.
  • Park Place in Farmington, is a new subdivision designed to protect water quality. It is a chapter in the Town Scale section of the manual, Community Redesign. It is also described at the Farmington project page on this website.
  • The Sumner Olson public housing site in Minneapolis, now the Near Northside mixed income development, involved a complex process of demolition and rebuilding. Information includes a downloadable case study.
